Xmas on it's way, year coming to a change -- time to wrap up 2009

Hello all fellow-zoobirders! I hope you are all fine and feeling good. My 2009 has been a good one. Work has been good, new ideas and development and more responsibilities. Bike has been riding all year round - only four (4) days I have commuted to the office with something else than a bicycle. Plus the long summer ride from Helsinki to Joensuu that I mentioned earlier. Musically it has been a quiet year - only 10 gigs (with 5 different groups) plus some studio work, but the quality beats th… Continue

Bike Trip from Helsinki to Joensuu

Hi all, I had been thinking about a bike trip that would take more than a day for a couple of summers. This summer seemed to open up an opportunity to do so. So I decided to ride from Helsinki, my current home town, to my place of birth, Joensuu. The shortest route between these two cities is around 480kms. But since those roads have quite a heavy traffic they didn't suit my purposes of seeing the beautiful nature on the way. So the plan for the route was drawn via smaller country roads, mostl… Continue

One for the road...

An Italian "Ciöcc" road frame (Dedacciai alu) I picked up last summer for 40EUR from a web board. Took a little while to compose it, but now it is finally ready to roll. It is now a 7-speed road bike, mostly shimano equipped, front for 531 Reynolds steel. Chainring / cranks Miche with weirdish 116 BCD mounting -- I was lucky to find one 42 tooth chainring for the spindle (that's why there is only one ring in front) ;) Rides very smoothly, weights under 10kg.

Sunny Sunday

Hello folks, yesterday I participated in a group ride organized by BC Hellsinki. Group gathered to the museum of modern art (Kiasma) in Helsinki 11AM. First stop was to say "hello" to the Rainbow Warrior III (Greenpeace's ship) that was visiting the Helsinki harbor. Shortly after the group (of 34 cyclists total) headed east toward the pictoresque city of Porvoo. Sun was shining, the wind was behind our backs and we arrived in Porvoo around 2PM. People had lunch in a park and sat down and chat… Continue

Perhaps the spring is coming after all

Howdy all, nice Wednesday afternoon was turning into the evening and I had decied that I will take my Single Speed Atala to the streets of Helsinki for the first time 2009. I was in our buildings bike cellar filling the tires, when a neighbour, apparently moving out from the building, rushed in to the cellar. He greeted me, took a quick look around, sighted and mumbled: "... oh that one, dammit, I cannot fit it into my cargo any more, I guess it has to go the garbage then". I looked at the bike… Continue

Still going strong

Hi again The two gigs with NMA were a success. Our old stock of CDs was sold out - luckily we were able to find few more in Italy. (Don't ask...), so we might have some stock left for the merchandise table next gig also. My latest project includes a scrap bicycle found in a forest. Litterally, it was dumped in a bush. I carried it home just to see, that there was some damage above the bottom bracket - I hope the welding is done well so it can be turned into something nice or is the recycle bin… Continue

Mixed emotions

Hello all Sorry about the pause on the postings. There has been some things going on. Last Sunday I learned that one fellow that used to play in band one of my bands has shared a gig for a couple of times and with whom I have been sitting in a bar chatting, talking having fun had been killed in a fire on carbon monoxide poisoning. R.I.P. So unneccessary, so sad. Gadget called carbon monoxide detector costs around $50. Get one. Today. I did, yesterday. For that being not enough of grief, I gue… Continue

Coutryside weekend

Our friends and us (me and my girlfriend) spent last weekend in countryside. Some Sauna, some beer, some boardgames, some walking trips outside, some bbq-cooking, fire in the fireplace. Very, very relaxing. Some shots:

Apples were almost ready.

Shine like a star

Yesterday, we went on recording the forthcoming album. We finalized two more tracks with the rhythm guitar parts and some extras. Quite exiting. After the session I was cycling home and I ran into a large group of sports fans heading towards the Olympic Stadium of Helsinki (home of Summer Games 1952) where Finland was playing againste Germany in the Football (Soccer for some Americans) World Cup qualifiers. Saw the game in tv, result was 3-3 - which is a good result - Germany being one of the E… Continue

"'cos it's raining, raining all day, and i'm diving deeper than ever.."

Yeah, althought the forecasts tell that the rain will stop today and we will get some sunny and crispy weather. We'll see about that. The lyrics in the title are from Psychoplasma's song called Raining. Excellent song. Today, after work, I am supposed to go to our "home studio" to help our guitar player to record some track to our punk-rock-bands ("Kätyrit" = The Henchmen) next album. Other guitar player - the one that is used to operate the studio - moved to Manchester UK, so we are kind on o… Continue

Reading List

Albert Eisentraut Bicycles

Albert Eisentraut acquired an appreciation of hand built bicycles at the elbow of legendary Paramount maker Oscar Wastyn in Chicago, and Albert, in many ways, is the dean of modern (post Korean War) USA custom frame builders. His frames, especially the famous "Model A" frames of the 1960s and 70s, had a special sculptural aesthetic and unorthodoxy in their shaping. This set Eisentraut bicycles apart from the European mimicry that influenced other builders at that time.
