February is a month of "nose to ground" vigilance, when gardeners walk around looking down to see what's springing up. It's just darn exhilarating to see little green things springing out of the earth. Tempting as it is, this narrow focus on what's poking up can distract us from looking up to take in our gardens as a whole. This is our last chance to take in the so-called bones of our gardens before everything starts leafing out and obscuring the actual layout. Then we'll be goners in the thrill of watching early-flowering trees and shrubs burst into bloom.
